Barcelona signed Rodri from Manchester City on 18 August 2026, on a contract to 30 June 2030. The club did not publish the fee, which ESPN and the Associated Press reported as a package worth €76.5m (about £65m) including add-ons. He arrives as the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner and, since July, Spain's World Cup-winning captain.
His road to Barcelona runs through two spells at Atlético Madrid, five years in a ceramics town near the Mediterranean, seven seasons in Manchester, and finals in Istanbul, Berlin and New Jersey.
Majadahonda: the academy that let him go
Rodri was born in Madrid on 22 June 1996 and joined Atlético Madrid's youth system in 2007, aged 11, from Rayo Majadahonda. Atlético's training ground and academy base is in Majadahonda, a town north-west of the city.
Mauricio Elena, who coached him in Atlético's under-14 side, recalled in a 2023 ESPN profile: "He already stood out. He was small, but you could see he was a boy who had vision and intelligence."
Size was the sticking point. Atlético did not think him tall or strong enough for a central midfielder, and in 2013, aged 16, they released him.
Villarreal: where he made his name
Villarreal, about 200 miles east of Majadahonda as the crow flies, in the province of Castellón, took him in. He came through the academy and the reserve team, cycling to training and taking his bike on the train, according to Barcelona's club site.
He also studied business administration and management at Jaume I University in nearby Castellón de la Plana, and lived in a university hall of residence while he played.
He made his first-team debut in December 2015 and his La Liga debut the following April, at 19. By 2017–18 he was a regular starter. The ground was still called El Madrigal when he arrived; in January 2017 the club renamed it the Estadio de la Cerámica, in recognition of the local ceramics industry.
Madrid, Manchester and a night in Istanbul
Atlético agreed a deal to bring him back in May 2018. He spent one season under Diego Simeone, playing home games at the Metropolitano, Atlético's stadium on the eastern side of the city since 2017. In July 2019 Manchester City paid his release clause, then a club record.
Over seven seasons at the Etihad he made 298 appearances and scored 28 goals. City count 14 major trophies in that time, among them four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League.
The goal that defined his time in Manchester was scored about 1,670 miles away. On 10 June 2023, at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium on the western side of Istanbul, he side-footed the only goal of the Champions League final against Inter in the 68th minute, completing City's treble. UEFA named him player of the match.
Then came the setback. On 22 September 2024 he went off in the first half of a 2–2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad with an ACL and meniscus injury. He won the Ballon d'Or, presented in Paris on 28 October 2024, while still recovering, and did not play again until 20 May 2025.
In 2025–26, his last season in Manchester, City won the League Cup and the FA Cup. In his farewell message he said: "My heart will always be blue."
Berlin and New Jersey: two summers with Spain
At Euro 2024 in Germany, his tournament began and ended at Berlin's Olympiastadion: a 3–0 win over Croatia in Spain's opening match, and the 2–1 win over England in the final on 14 July 2024. He went off at half-time in the final with an injury, but UEFA's technical observers named him player of the tournament.
Two years later he captained Spain at the World Cup in North America. In the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on 19 July 2026, Spain beat Argentina 1–0 after extra time, Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute. Rodri won the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player without scoring a goal.
Barcelona: the latest pin
Spotify Camp Nou, in the Les Corts district, sits about 150 miles up the coast from Villarreal. Getting there took three bids: Sky Sports reported that City turned down two earlier offers from Barcelona.
Real Madrid were interested too. Their coach, José Mourinho, appointed in June, said: "The club contacted him, but he had some doubts." He added: "I don't need Rodri." On arriving in Barcelona, Rodri told reporters: "For me, it's a dream to play for Barcelona."
He made his debut on 27 August 2026, coming on in the 63rd minute of a 2–0 win over Athletic Club at a Camp Nou that is still being rebuilt.
He is also on the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, alongside Barcelona team-mates Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí. The award will be presented in London on 26 October 2026.
