The Ballon d'Or has been handed out in Paris every year since France Football created it in 1956. The 70th edition, on 26 October 2026, will be the first given anywhere else: the ceremony moves to the London Palladium, the theatre on Argyll Street in the West End, more than 200 miles across the Channel from the city that has always held it.
The award now follows a season rather than a calendar year, for the fifth time in its history. The window that counts ran from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026, which means it closes on the day of the World Cup final in New Jersey, where Spain beat Argentina to take the title. A hundred journalists vote, one from each of the hundred highest-ranked nations in the FIFA men's ranking.
This is a map of where some of the thirty shortlisted players were born, and of the room they are all trying to reach.
The city the award is leaving
Kylian Mbappé was born in Paris in 1998 and grew up in Bondy, in the northern suburbs. He is the one leading name on the list who comes from the city the Ballon d'Or is leaving behind. In straight lines, the gala's old home and his birthplace sit a few miles apart; its new home is more than two hundred miles away, across the sea.
Two from London, six miles apart
London does not have to look far for a local interest. Harry Kane was born in Walthamstow, in the east of the city, about six miles from the Palladium stage. The venue has hosted the Royal Variety Performance and decades of television; for one night it becomes football's.
Spain, from a teenager to a comeback
Lamine Yamal was born in Esplugues de Llobregat, on the edge of Barcelona, in 2007, which made him eighteen for most of the season being judged and a world champion by its final day. Rodri, the 2024 winner, was born in Madrid; a knee injury cost him most of the following year, and the shortlist marks his return.
The holder, and the eight-time winner
Ousmane Dembélé, who won the 2025 award, was born in Vernon, in Normandy, west of Paris. And Lionel Messi, born in Rosario in Argentina, is on the list once more: he has won the Ballon d'Or a record eight times, the first in 2009 and the most recent in 2023, and no one else has more than five.
On the map the shortlist spreads from Rosario in the southern hemisphere up through France and Spain to two points in London, where, on the night, all of it converges on one stage in the West End.
